The Protocol to the African Charter on Human Rights and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, also known as the Maputo Protocol, was adopted on 11th July 2003 by the African Union (AU). As of April 2013, 48 countries have signed the Protocol out of which 36 have ratified. The protocol aspires to confront the continual discrimination, abuse and marginalisation of women in Africa and to reinforce their rights.
