Water & Sanitation

In 2008 the African Union (AU) adopted the Sharm EI-Sheikh commitments, for accelerating the achievement of water and sanitation goals in Africa. These commitments relate to importance of water and sanitation for social, economic and environmental development in Africa. It was a response to the under-utilisation and uneven sharing of water resources in Africa and how this affects the attainment of food and energy securities. It supports the achievement of the water commitments in the Millennium development goals (MDGs) and was in line with the United Nations declaring 2008 the International Year for Sanitation.
